I built a quick project for a programmable light string in preparation for making more complex light shows.

Parts list:

  • Arduino UNO or compatible board
  • WS8211 LED light string. I used a 50 light string from ebay. Other types will work.
  • USB Power plug 2.4amp 5v. You will need more amps if you use more lights. Check the power requirements for your selected light string.
  • 220Ω resistor
  • Short wires – 1 each red, black, green (colors optional)
  • USB cable

Tools needed:

  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Wire stripper
  • Wire cutter or  snips

Code is at:

You will also need the library
